The Season of Sakura

'SAKURA' IS JAPANESE FOR CHERRY BLOSSOM. THE SEASON OF LOVELY CHERRY BLOSSOM TREES WITH THEIR BEAUTIFUL PINK COLOUR AND *'HANAMI' PLAYS A VERY MAJOR PART IN THE JAPANESE YEAR AND IS ONE BIG CELEBRATION! THE ZOOMED UP VIEW SHOWS THE LATEST CHERRY BLOSSOM FORECAST (SAKURA-ZENSEN)2008. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FINGER PAINTING OIL PASTEL ON CANVAS 18 x 24 cm. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *Hanami*...."flower viewing" is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the beauty of flowers, "flower" in this case almost always meaning cherry blossoms or ume blossoms. From late March to early May, sakura bloom all over Japan. The blossom forecast (Sakurazensen lit. cherry blossom front) is announced each year by the weather bureau, and is watched carefully by those planning Hanami as the blossoms only last a week or two. In modern-day Japan, Hanami mostly consists of having an outdoor party beneath the Sakura during daytime or at night. Hanami at night is called Yozakura (lit. "Night Sakura"). *From Wiki* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *THANK YOU FOR STOPPING BY!*

very beautiful! Oil pastels are so fun... I hope you had fun using them! It's so great how you usually have an interesting story to go with your artwork...

Artist Reply: Thank you my guest. Yes, I really enjoyed using oil pastel! I am not a journalist but just enjoy to put a story with my art. Sometimes fact, sometimes fiction, like my dream :)

wow! that's beautiful! i just read about a cherry blossom festival in a book by author yukio mishima called 'spring snow' -i love the mountain in the background!

Artist Reply: Hi, Ben. Thank you for your comment. I love old Japanese literary books : Natsume Soseki, Tanizaki Junichirou, Akutagawa, Dazai, Kawabata Yasunari....and of course Mishima Yukio too. If you have chance to get a book by Tanizaki Junichirou's "Sasameyuki" , please try to read it. This is my one of favourite books by him and you can see beautiful traditional Japanese including cherry blossom viewing. I found this**http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Makioka_Sisters_%28novel%29
