As I have mentioned before, this glacier is the origin of the White River. When it is melting in the summer, the river runs white with glacial sediment. As the temperatures drop and the glacier stops melting, the river becomes a pearly green color as it gets most of it's water from the rain and snow. Here you can see ice exposed thru the debris that covers it. Don't think that this is just dirt....it contains boulders the size of a 1-car garage. Our daughter and I have been to the face of this glacier 5 times...it's an awesome feeling!! When sitting on a boulder to eat lunch, we could feel the vibration of the ice thru our core, as it continually moves with the force of gravity. Sadly, the trail that takes you to the moraine was washed out in 2006. 2nd shot.....company to the top of 1st Burroughs....
