Theodorus Van Gogh (Dutch, 1802 - 85) // Painting of a Woman, 1876 // Oil-based pigments, goathair paintbrush || This is a painting of a woman in a black dress. Or perhaps the dress is a very dark blue. We are not sure. The woman is facing away from the viewer and seems to be looking at the objects on the table. The specific object at which she is looking is not clear, but it is likely the shiny metal tea kettle visible on the left side of the bottom half of the painting. There is a chair beyond the kettle, and it is possible that she is looking at this chair instead of the kettle. Her left hand is on the table, possibly for support, or possibly because she likes how the tablecloth feels. The tablecloth appears to have a floral pattern. There is a metal bowl to the right of the woman, and it appears to have an orange resting inside of it. There could be more fruit in this bowl, but as only a portion of the vessel is visible, it is unclear. There is a mirror on the wall across from the woman, but her reflection cannot be seen. There is also a window to the left side of the painting, although we cannot tell if it is open or closed. This painting is aesthetically pleasing and must have required some artistic skill to complete. There is not much more to describe.
