238,855 mile high club

A shout-out to Peter Thorpe, who paints retro-rocket ships from old science fiction movies. School kids the world over follow his work online and emulate it. He adds funky, abstract backgrounds that evoke a psychedelic vibe, similar to the "star gate" scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey. It's in stark contrast to his detailed book cover artwork for such authors as Tony Hillerman and Garrison Keillor. Thorpe immerses himself in space culture to understand our place in the universe and marvel at the celestial bodies. As the astronaut Christa McAuliffe once said, "If offered a seat on a rocket ship, don't ask what seat. Just get on."
