Tom Girl

Oil Paint on Stretched Canvas 76cm x 102cm - Based on my personal experience working in the the Fashion Industry, and the women that inhabit it. I have painted this person with an abstract feel to represent the different types of back-stories that each fashion model has. The dark background is meant to represent the hidden part of their personality, merging in with the person that we all see. The 'Look-back' Pose. Tom-Girl, a play on the phrase Tom-Boy is about one of the models I have known. She’s streetwise. An ex-prostitute who pulled herself out of the gutter and became a successful model. Life’s harsh lessons, learned the hard way, have shaped her into a woman who knows exactly who she is and what she wants. Gone is the woman who once lived a life dictated by survival. In her place is a woman who knows her worth, who commands respect, and who unapologeticly takes control of her own destiny. No longer a prostitute, she now stands as proof - that you can achieve anything you want if you really want it. This piece reflects the powerful transformation she’s undergone. A journey from broken dreams to brilliance.... She’s not the easy mark you think she is.
