'Lanceiro negro' (black spearman). 1835 has begun a war between the empire of Brazil and riograndense republic. The republic was against slavery, so they offered freedom to all the slaves who fought for their cause. They received a spear, a red 'poncho', and become the only infantary men of the resistence, and they were called the black spearman (lanceiros negros). unfortunately the republic lost the war, and they lost their freedom.
