Self Portrait

Oil and watercolors; traditional and abstract; landscapes, still lifes, portraits and figures – all are artistic expressions which have meaning for Jean-Marie Losson.

An accomplished draftsman, Jean-Marie is a master at creating human and animal figures in motion. He captures the human spirit within his models with a few pencil stokes. The facile and impulsive nature of watercolors were Jean-Marie’s earliest painting excursions as he studied in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, winning awards for his work along the way.

But the more studied and laborious work of oils soon beckoned -- the subjects ranging from the man at the window, to the haunting abstract landscapes of Nicolas de Stael. Painting is the passion of Jean-Marie’s life. “When I started painting 35 years ago, my focus was on the representational styles of the 18th century artists. It is only over time that my appreciation and interest in abstract painting has developed to become a fascination.”

Jean-Marie Losson was born in 1946, in Belgium."I lived in the Southern and Northern part of his beautiful country before moving to Germany and the Netherlands." He has been living in the US since 1988.

Fine art and antiques have been the consuming interests of Jean-Marie Losson since his childhood in Belgium, home to old masters as well as more modern artists such as James Ensor, Delvaux and Rene Magritte.

“Art has been in my blood from the beginning, although I followed the traditional path of becoming an engineer and corporate executive.”

After 25 years working for one of Belgium’s largest and most renowed companies, Jean-Marie decided to devote full time to his driving interests in painting and antique collection.

While corporate life was not of particular interest, it did allow for a life of travel and exposure to other cultures, both in Europe and the United States. “I understand the German expressionist movement better from having lived in Munich for four years. And, my appreciation of the Dutch masters was honed while living in Amsterdam for five years. It is all grist for the mill when exploring painting subjects and styles. I am starting to appreciate the American masters such as Motherwell and Frankenthaler having made the United States my home for over 20 years.” Jean-Marie Losson holds a master’s degree in engineering from the University of Louvain, Belgium. He has studied under established artists in Europe and the U.S.
