Self Portrait

Sandro Cocco (1973) born in Antwerp. His father was Sardinian and his mother Flemish. He began by studying illustration (1993) where he learned the basic techniques: observation, light and shadow, perspective, color and the use of drawing and painting materials, but he chose to study Painting (1994) the following year because he wanted to explore his personal expression. During his studies of Painting (1994-1998), he studied two years of observation by nature: nude, still life and interiors which ended with drawings in blind observation. But in the third year he started doing his own work. He began to explore "Automatic Drawing" and soon began to explore other mediums such as printmaking, sculpture, installation and video. In the fourth year, he felt the urge to explore storytelling, which resulted in him graduating with 20 digital photo collages. He continued to make collages for three years (1999-2001). For this reason, he decided to study Comics and Illustration (2001-2003). He made a biographical graphic novel and published some short stories but he wanted to make works again without any limit of expression. In 2004, he started making abstract “Amorphous” drawings again in the 'Automatic Drawing' technique. But in 2005, he visited a friend who had a surreal painting hanging on his wall. So he started his ongoing series “Imaginary Rooms” in which he uses visual motives that gradually grow. For him, it is a kind of diary in automatic drawing, but he hopes to communicate with the viewer.
