Self Portrait

California figure artist J.E. Kitchell has drawn and painted since childhood. His work is grounded in realism but he allows himself to let the work speak for itself and guide him in its own unique path to completion. His favorite pieces retain the energy of his sketches, allowing the viewer to participate in the story suggested by the image.

Many of his favorite artists growing up were illustrators (or branded illustrators by critics) so he feels a work is successful if it tells a story but in his eyes the viewer should be allowed to become part of the process, so finished works are not overly finished, leaving room for interpretation. Most of his work is created in monotone or limited palette favoring earth colors and muted color combinations. Form is emphasized over color.

In the past he has produced editorial cartoons because he loved to draw caricature. He was published in local and regional newspapers. His window murals for local businesses to celebrate local events that were well received.

But figure art was always his first love and as his non-art career winds down he is picking up the pace of his fine art production.
