TampaBayMuse.com 2007 Feature Artist Interview With: Pamela Seiber

1. Please provide a brief bio and how you became interested in being an artist and any training/education etc.

I believe my interested in art stems back to when I was a toddler and lived with my grandparents. My mother took care of my grandfather who was very ill for several years. They would sit me down with some paper and crayons to keep me quiet and out of the way. I wasn't able to play or be loud so at a young age I learned to express myself creatively; sometimes all over the walls or on my grandmothers newly upholstered cushions. He passed when I was 5. It wasn't until 6th grade when one of my teachers realized that I had a talent. It was at that time I started enrolling in art classes. In 1993 I was accepted into Sarasota's Ringling School of Art and Design Fine Arts Program. Today I have a working studio in downtown Bradenton.

2. You work in various mediums from acrylics to mixed media. Do you have a favorite medium and do you find it more challenging and creative to work in different mediums?

I have never been one for limitations, particularly due to fact that I get easily bored. I have the tendency to work on different projects at the same time. I have a book of concepts and ideas I continually work on and tweak before even physically executing them. That is usually when my choice of medium comes into play. What ever medium I use at that time is just one part of the creative whole. Recently I have been developing several ideas for instillations but am still searching for the correct venues to execute these ideas.

3. Who are some of your influences/inspirations, either art, musical or other?

I'm really intrigued by the news and main stream media; constantly being bombarded by clips, images and sound bites. I find it very powerful.

4. Your recent abstracts from the Shadow Gallery in Cocoa Beach really intrigued me with their simplicity and beauty. What was your inspiration/motivation for that series?

Actually that particular series of images is something I recently revisited from when I was doing printmaking10 years ago. The inspiration behind that work is purely emotional. I wanted to for the past several years to transcend that same imagery into paint while keeping the same esthetics, I believe now I have accomplished that. You can see them on this coast as well; Artistic Eye Gallery in Bradenton's Village of the Arts will be hosting several pieces from that collection during the month of January 2007. Your favorite shoes?

I have a pair of leather boots that I am completely in love with.

The Last movie you watched? An Inconvenient Truth was the last one I saw in a theater.

What would your one message to the world be? I think that changes daily, but if has to one thing& question everything.

What if anything do you think the Tampa Bay area needs to do/have to be more supportive of working artists?

First most to educate theme selves about the difference between art and décor. But in the same respects I feel it is the artist's responsibility to create a culture that is viable to the public and to have an open dialogue with ties to the community that lends it's self to it's creative culture.
