SLOW BULL

This is a "pencil" of "Slow Bull. Born in 1844, Slow Bull was an esteemed Oglala subchief and warrior who valiantly fought in numerous battles with the Kutenai, Blackfeet, Pawnee, Shoshoni, and Apsaroke. A band of the Lakota or Teton Sioux tribe, the Oglala inhabited the North American Plains and Prairies west of the Missouri River, and were primarily hunters. The photo used for reference was taken by Edward Sheriff Curtis, circa 1890s.

The original is 6.75" x 9.5" overall. It is drawn on medium weight, hot press Crescent Illustration Board. German made Faber-Castell Drawing Pencils were used. The majority of the "pencil" was done with a #6 lead, while the remainder was darkened with a #8 lead. Total time to complete was almost 17.5 hours.
