A Naval Battle

This impressive maritime battle scene is believed to be a massive cat fight in the Kattegat region, involving the fleet of Admiral Mogens Dunkelmørthel against a small group local hostile separatist galleys. The galleys are carrying Danish flags, and some the markings on Dunkelmørthel's vessels indicates involvement of private contractor warships. The outcome of the struggle was devastating for the separatists. The surviving rebels were brought to Copenhagen for public display, flogged with dog tails, soaked in water and then put into hard labor at Smudsholt Tugthuus. Although the piece is signed by Fiigenschou, some scholars have suggested it is a contemporary copy made by the notorious copycat Holger Brinch. Canvas size 98 x 52 cm. Later gilt frame. Sold.
