This is a colored pencil painting done on Dura-lar matte surfaced polyester film using Prismacolor Verithin pencils. I was initally attracted to the beautiful fall colors, but the play of light and shadows and the open gate is what actually inspired me to attempt to express what I was thinking as I stood at the gate... beautiful rhymes, rhythms, and memories dwell here. Demensions are 8 X 10 inches. I hope you too can sense this peace.

Very impressive. It's very charming and nicely done. You're very talented.

Artist Reply: Barry: thanks so much for such generous comments. This is one of my favorite paintings, so much so that I had it put on my business cards. This is a charming setting and is very pretty in the fall. I guess that I'm drawn to fall colors. Thanks again. Best regards, Will

Love the subject, composition and attention to detail which have come together to produce a beautiful, atmospheric, work of art.

Darlene Foster 25 Jan 2015

oh my best yet

Artist Reply: Darlene: thank you very much. This too is one of my favorite pieces. I just was taken by how the light and shadows interacted so well. This old cemetery has lots of forgotten stories, I'm sure. Regards, Will

Joe Schilling 19 Jan 2015

Great work. Amazing detail and use of shadows and highlights. You are very talented Will.

Artist Reply: Joe: thank you so very much for such kind comments. Light and shadow really does help almost every piece, including this one. I'm self-taught and am a retired university biology professor. I taught for 31 years and dabbled in colored pencil for a long time part-time, as we all say prior to retirement. Now, I spend most of my time on my are and on my bicycle out on the bike trails when weather and temperature allow. Thanks again for taking time to look at and comment on my work. Best regards, Will

Vernonette Gaddy 28 Dec 2014

Sharon Lee 05 Nov 2014

Hi Will, wow, I am humbled by your work! You are an amazing artist...!!!! I love your work! And now that I know how great your work is, I appreciate even more your wonderful comments on my photographs!

Artist Reply: Sharon: Wow! You are much too kind, but I sincerely appreciate your comments. I love to render detail. Perhaps a little artistic talent is required, but actually I believe that it is the Dura-lar polyester film surface that I work on that makes all the difference. This material is just great. I add color to both sides of the film. Both surfaces are matte and will accept color easily. Thanks you again for being so kind. Best regards, Will

Linda Bickston 28 Oct 2014

Will, I am amazed at the beauty of this pencil work. Truly, you are an artist.

Artist Reply: Linda: you are way too kind with your comments, but I will blush and accept them. Thank you! I like to think that I do have a little talent, but I really believe that the Dura-lar matte surfaced polyester film that I use is the real reason for the results you see. Thanks again. Have a great day. Regards, Will

Hava Hegenbarth 20 Oct 2014

Wow - this is gorgeous!

Anneke Hut 11 Oct 2014

This is so awesome!! You are a master with the pencil, Will!

Artist Reply: Anneke: Your comments are too gracious, but greatly appreciated. Thank you. I have learned to be light handed with Prismacolor pencils, but I think that the final appearance of the pieces that I do are more a credit to the Dura-lar matte surfaced polyester film that I use. I use nothing else now. Best regards, Will

Carliss Mora 10 Oct 2014

This is so great! I love the way you've shown the shadow from the fence gate. Very meticulous, and detailed work, Will.

Artist Reply: Carliss: thanks so much! The play between light and shadow caught my attention initially. The beautiful fall foliage was a bonus. This old cemetery looked so interesting with all the untold stories that it holds. The old open gate just invited me to step in, at least with my mind. I'm glad that you too related to this scene. Best regards, Will

Joanna DeRitis 07 Oct 2014

Incredible artwork

Artist Reply: Joanna: thanks so much for your much appreciated comment! Also thank you for your email. I'm glad that you and your husband appreciate detail. This seems to be my style. Perhaps comes from 31 years as a University biology professor who taught gross anatomy and human physiology. Detail has always been my "middle name". Best regards, Will

MH Heintz 17 Sep 2014

Beautiful work with mind-blowing detail

Artist Reply: MH:Thank you so very much. Comments greatly appreciated. I was a university biology professor for 31 years. I taught among other things, gross anatomy. Details are my middle name! It's carried over to my art by nature. I'm glad that you find this pleasing. Best regards, Will

Wonderful colors and details (like the wood on the side of the house) as well as the intricate gate and the shadows.

John Simmons 08 Sep 2014

This does a great job of capturing the beauty of fall days when the air is crisp.

Artist Reply: John: thank you so much for taking time to view my work and for your comment. I love art because it allows viewers to see what the piece reveals to them personally. You saw a crisp fall day. Actually, it was quite warm, but very little humidity. Here in the Iowa, this is a true beginning to fall. By the way, I revisited your portfolio. Your raven is great! Best regards, Will

Stefani Wehner 20 Aug 2014

Wonderful work, Will! Great to see how you manage all these fine details!

Tom Graney 19 Aug 2014

Thank you for the compliment on my work "Parham Road Barn." :-) This is excellent work you have here Will! I love the composition. Your pencil skills are quite impressive. I've been trying to ween myself off of my small brushes and use broad, bold strokes and much less detail. One watercolor style I like is by Bill Vrscak. His is the kind of style I'm shooting for in my future paintings. Keep up the excellent work!

Artist Reply: Tom:Thank you for your very nice comments. They are greatly appreciated. I very much like your current style of watercolor work, but if you wish to alter your approach, I wish you good fortune. I'm sure that you will master the look you desire very shortly. Your are very talented. Best regards, Will

Dawson - Lynn James 18 Aug 2014

Angel Estevez 17 Aug 2014

Wonderful artwork! Many beautiful colors and variety of details, I believe it was very laborious. The gate is the perfect the scene.. Congratulations Will.

Artist Reply: Angel: thank you again for your wonderful comments. I like details. I suppose that this is what gives my work the photorealistic look that I strive to acheive. I loved the colors in this scene, but it was the old ajar gate that really inspired the painting. It was fun to do and was not as laborious as you might imagine. Best regards, Will

Sharon De Vore 16 Aug 2014

THIS IS SO AMAZING, WILL. IT IS HARD TO IMAGINE SOMEONE CAN DO THIS INCREDIBLE WORK. OUTSTANDING.

Artist Reply: Sharon: Thank you so very much. My goal is to acheive as photorealistic images as I can. My gross anatomy academic background has made me very conscious of details. I guess detail is my style. Again I appreciate your kind comments. Best regards, Will

ascension nelson 16 Aug 2014

Joanie Holliday 16 Aug 2014

GORGEOUS WORK WILL !! SO BEAUTIFULLY DONE !! MEMORIES SEEM TO GIVE AN ARTIST A GREAT ADVANTAGE.. JOANIE

Artist Reply: Joanie: thank you so much. I always look forward to and appreciate your generous comments. I think that all artists look at things with wonder and curiosiity. We tend to think below the surface of the piece we're working on. This way of thinking can't be unique to me. Thank you again and best regards, Will

Tony Durrant 16 Aug 2014

Simply brilliant.

Artist Reply: Tony: Thank you soooo much! Your short comment says it all to me. Much appreciated. As always, best regards, Will
Artist Reply: Tony: How does one even begin to say thank you to such a generous and kind comment? But all I can say is "thank you". Best regards, Will
