Bernard Moitessier had surely not the intention to win a beauty contest when he made build the « Joshua ». The steel low-budget boat builded by a cauldron-builder and with telephone-pylons as masts she looks like what she had to do : sailing single-handed non-stop around the world in the Golden Globe race, who took place in 1968. Bernard Moitessier was an outstanding navigator and admirer of Joshua Slocum, reason why he called his boat « Joshua ». Soon after the race started his radio gave up and the only communication he had with the external world where the rare meetings with ships to which he shooted copys of his logbook with a catapult. He was one of the favorites to win the race but he left the contest in sight of the arrival. At the hight of South-Africa he shifted his course and sailed again over the Indian ocean and the Pacific to Tahiti, so to say « to protect his soul in search after equilibration » and never sailed out the race. The man was an convinced yogi. Personally I have my objection by this explanation, but who am I. Anyhow, sailing one and a half times around the world, single handed without one single stop was a whole performance. He described his trip in a book « The long way around » . Bernard Moitessier deceased but his restored boat lies still in the port of La Rochelle. Image size : 260 x 360 mm
