Arches and Angles

This is the obverse view of Angles and Arches. It is taken from around the central point of the Choir Crossing looking down the Nave of the Abbey towards the Narthex Arcade (the ruined window on the horizon). The arches to the left of the photograph is known as the South Aisle and measures almost 90 meters in length. With this knowledge onboard you can easily estimate the vast size of the building. The Narthex Arcade stands at around 25 meters high. Try to imagine this the Abbey with a roof on and you can feel how imposing the entire site must have been in the 12th century when most of the erection was finished. This photographs only represents a miniscule section of the entire buildings and structures at Fountains Abbey. Not bad to say it was only started with 12 monks wanting to lead a simple life in the eyes of their God. Impressive to say the least.

Thank you for the very generous rating and the wonderful comment on my pic "Smoke and Mirrors"....You know, I was looking through your gallery and wanted to post on a picture. They were all so good that I had a difficult time deciding---so, I commented 'Arches and Angles' because I adore photographs that show such depth of field of such interestion structures!
