When Massasoit was the sachem (chief) of the Wampanoags, a mutual-aid peace treaty with the Plymouth colony existed, which lasted as a model for 40 years. When the colony governor Bradford declared a day of “Thanksgiving” he invited Massasoit who arrived a day early with 90 Indians & didn’t come empty handed. He brought 5 dressed deer & a dozen turkeys & helped with the food preparations. Wrestling & shooting contests went so well that he didn’t want to leave, so the “1st Thanksgiving” lasted for 3 days.
