Stained Glass is an environmental art form. As light floods the interior of a church or synagogue, the inner space is transformed into a mystical source of joy, peace, and tranquility. My experience with stained glass design has familiarized me with the power of light and the difference between the three primary colors of light, RGB (red, green and blue); the three primaries used in printmaking, CMY (cyan, magenta and yellow); and the three primary pigment colors, RYB (red, yellow and blue), and how they break down into their cool and warm, saturated and unsaturated counterparts. Light, in all it's brilliance and glory is luminous and warm. It evokes spiritual majesty, presence and blessing. It can suggest an aura surrounding a spiritual being or inner enlightenment. Light expresses joy, peace and spiritual bliss. When contrasted with deep, dark, rich colors it expresses power. When surrounded by subtle warm colors it suggests warmth and wellbeing. When surrounded by subdued cool colors it evokes relaxation and happiness. There are a plethora of emotions and states of consciousness light and various combinations of colors can symbolize and bring about within the viewer. I believe the future of design and composition will see more substance in terms of a mélange of classical as well as contemporary themes and conceptions introduced by artists living in the present and into the future. We possess an extremely broad history of art that can be drawn upon with the introduction of both small and sometimes very large innovations. In summation, these works are about light.
