This painting is the first 29"x41" watercolor I ever painted. It is a view of Bunker Hill which was the L.A's equivalent of Knob Hill in San Francisco. The wealthy citizens built up here because Los Angeles was built in the the Los Angeles River wash, and during the rainy season which usually arrives in full force after January the city would often be flooded. Bunker Hill was considered so formidable a geological barrier that it was thought that L.A. would never grow beyond it. The only way up the hill to build was at Fourth and Hill Sts. a block south of this view. We are looking down on the corner of Third and Hill Sts. four years before Angel's flight was opened. The view is about from the top of the old Presbytarian Church across from the old City Hall.

Splendid work! Does anything remain? Living in Middelburg with its 1500 historical buildings, I am spoiled. Each day, I cycle or walk through the old town centre to savour the architectural gems. "Groeten uit Nederland!"Julie Mayser 22 Mar 2008

Mr. Stanton, I must now take a break from drinking in your paintings because I am full and anything more right now will overfill me and spill. I want to retain that which I have and allow the subconscious Jerrie Glasper to interpret what I have seen here, for I am too shallow to even speak about your art...Thanks for sharing yourself with the world.Leigh Karchner 06 Jan 2007
