A wooden spiral. These are a lot of fun to carve. I did several Santa's with beards like this, but I was at a craft show at the time and people bought them before I had a chance to take pictures.

Interesting piece. What type of wood are you using, it looks soft like pine ?

Artist Reply: Thanks. The wood is basswood. Basswood is about as hard as pine, but doesn't split as easiy. Pine has hard and soft layers, a piece of basswood is about the same all the way through.
