Entertainment

© 2006 Armando Salas. ---During 5 years, I did for Tv Spanish magazine "SUPERTELE" two pages weekly. A very complex and stressing work, because I had to create, draw and color the entertainment. And the publisher demanded an UNIQUE original; this means: two pages (44 X 27,5 cm.) on an unique paper, as you see here. Really, only ONE drawing. The texts were added in printing house. Sometimes, the layout was very difficult, really, because of the central fold...No text in this zone. Still I have the headache:-))). --- Zoomed image: typical costumes from Galicia (Northwestern Spain), region where I live. Enjoy my headache!:-)))

It is very good, but im puzzled about the published demand... werent computers invented yet when you did this? it looks the kind of work you can easily layout with a image editor program, sparing you lots of headache... why doing it by hand? Love your Galician costumes btw :)

Artist Reply: When I accepted this work, the publisher only worked on McIntosh computers. And I had a PC. Then, no McIntosh nor software in Spain... or excessively expensive. It was not rentable to buy such equipment to do this work. Solution: in the beginning, I sent sketches-layouts and separate drawings, but... they began to play with my drawings in computer, to don't follow my layouts, and you can imagine: non-artists playing with professional work... OMG!!! I menaced of leaving the work (my pages, then, had the 72 % of share in readers preference). And the publisher ask to me: "Do as you want, but in ONE DOUBLE PAGE. We'll only add the text. And of course, we'll not edit your drawings". That 70 % grew until 78 % during 5 years.
