Sunday, February 9, 1964:
"The
Beatles" were
beamed into the American public's
psyche on
that night. The USA first watched
this
news-making group live on the eclectic
Ed
Sullivan
variety Show (they were followed
by a
guy who did card tricks). The
band's performance
surpassed their hype.
Electric
guitars, American Rock 'n' Roll,
British accents, Cuban
heels, Beatle boots, mop
tops,
piercing screams,
and mania reigned.
I
tried to transfer that electricity to paper
with McCartney, Harrison and Lennon
projecting out
of the TV screen (or transistor radio
speaker?). The black and blue
horizontals
suggest a vintage television
broadcast. The
band at top, on the left and right, is split
by an overhead bird's eye view of the
group, as if they were actual
beetles.
Oh those boys... I absolutely adore George's face- I love watching him do his silly little dances on stage. I love how you're able to capture the essence of a person with just a few strokes. "What do you call that hairstyle?" "Arthur." :)
