A Stitch In Time

This is yet another of my Reminisce Magazine cover paintings. I particularly enjoyed portraying the little girl in this piece as she was just enthralled with that beautiful quilt her grandmother created from some thread and cloth. The challenge in painting this was lighting both subjects in a pleasing way. It required several light sources to do so. BTW, see if you can find the technical flaw in this painting. It's hard to find, but it's there.

If my paintings had 'flaws' like yours, I would be so happy! My goodness, this is an EXCELLENT work of art!!!

OMG, trying to find a flaw in this painting is like searching for a loose wire in a space shuttle ... a f t e r a successful mission! (Is it a Grandma's shadow on the hearth? Or a soot stain? If it is a shadow it's inconsistent with the light source. OK ... next I'll pretend to be a rocket scientist.) ~ M

Okay, Tom--I give. What is the flaw? Fireplace hmm? Is it the tile on the floor? Seems to be smaller tiles on teh bottom right hand side than shown in the center? Love that you made us look---makes for an even more fun viewing! :) -Kerra

Artist Reply: Congratulations Kerra...you got it. If you follow a straight line across the front of the hearth from middle to right, you'll see that the right side is out of proportion and perspective. One of the problems in working on such a complicated painting is that you tend to get so wrapped up in details that you take your eye off the whole. In my haste to complete the painting for Reminisce Magazine, I did just that. Shame on me for not remember an old art school rule to always step back and look at the overall work while in progress. So, there you have it!

Superb!! Are these real models?? The only thing I see that doesn't look right is the paneling should be showing at the end of the brick by the grate on the right side. But I had to look hard!! Another masterpiece, Tom!! How long does it take you to do something so detailed??

Artist Reply: They are (were in the case of the grandmother) real models. Close Ruth, but not quite. It does have to do with the fireplace, specifically the hearth. Take a close look and you should see what I mean. A painting like this takes about 2-2½ weeks, working 8 hour days.

your work is just stunning Tom!! As to a flaw (I can bet that's a REAL rarity in your work!!...) The only thing I can find in this portrait of perfection MIGHT be up in the upper right corner.., below the mantle shelf...like a piece of moulding.
