"Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind."
Sting & Police
Here are two windmills at Nederhorst den
Berg,
a wonderful peaceful suburb between
Amsterdam and Utrecht (HOLLAND),
where I
was born and raised.
Some History:
The Netherlands are so closely associated with
windmills,
that it's often the first fact people
recall about our country.
(Besides the wooden
shoes!)
The Dutch built windmills for many
centuries.
There are still a pleasing number of remaining
windmills in the Netherlands
- the number is
about 1150 and rising.
In the past 10 years many extensive rebuilds
have occurred to add to this number.
Actually to some extent, the windmills built the
country itself,
since without them much of the
land drainage could not have taken place.
In the past mills were developed for corn
milling, land drainage, saw milling, and in fact
all manner of industrial purposes.
Despite this widespread use, Dutch mills are in
many ways quite primitive - using canvas sails
which were turned to wind by hand.
Wishing you a great
Memorial weekend!
Sjon.
Als men over Nederland spreekt, denkt men
gelijk aan molens (en klompen
natuurlijk!)
De Hollanders bouwden eeuwen geleden al
molens.
gedraaid.
Ik wens U allen fijne Pinksterdagen
toe
Sjon

Very nice drawing. I never realized how many different types of windmills there must be. It must be interesting to see a modern windmill next to an old, historical one. The state of DE is/was looking at windmills to provide an alternate way of getting energy. A former governor is campaigning for it.
