Takes Your Breath Away!!

.....This is the view my husband saw from atop the 2nd Burroughs Mountain. Not only is Mt. Rainier so close you can almost touch it, but Glacier Basin is 1400 ft. below. It's a good thing we aren't afraid of heights. There is a trail to Glacier Basin, that starts in White River Campground, used by climbers to begin their accent of Mt. Rainier's north side. (The south side is easier.) Here you also see "The Wedge" (the diamond-shaped rock formation) with Inter Glacier in the center of it. Often you can see climbers crossing the Wedge with your naked eye. The Emmons Glacier, along with Tahoma Peak is to the left of the Wedge....to the right is the Winthrop Glacier and Russell Cliff beyond. The 2nd photo shows the 3rd Burroughs Mt., our goal for next year. The distance to the top of there is not marked but it has to be over a mile. I do know that you must drop 400 ft. down the side of 2nd Burroughs and then it's 800 ft. to the top of 3rd. Our daughter and I have made it half-way up 3rd Burroughs twice and all the way up only once. On the day we finally made it to the top, we had 15 minutes to enjoy the breathtaking veiw of the Winthrop Glacier stretched out from above us on the left to 1500 ft. below us, before clouds moved in and we could see nothing. It was then a hard 6 miles back to the parking lot. It's not a hike for just anyone....it's gonna take a long time for us to get in shape for that one. Oh, how I wish I had young legs again.... :) Thanks for stopping by!!!!
