HOW THE BLACK STALLION FORGETS

HOW THE BLACK STALLION FORGETS paintography by Michael (miguel) Forbus INTRODUCTION TO PABLO NERUDA'S POEM BY MICHAEL (miguel) FORBUS THE BLACK STALLION FORGETS SHORTLY AFTER THE FIGHT THE PALOMINO THAT HE HAS RUN FROM HIS HERD, HE SOON FORGETS THE SCARS OF BATTLE, THE PAIN OF HOOF PRINTS ON HIS FLANK. HE SOON FORGETS WHICH MARE HE TOOK IN THE MOONLIGHT LAST NIGHT AND WHAT IT FELT LIKE TO HIM. THE WILD STALLION HAS LITTLE MEMORY AND ONLY FEELINGS OF THE INSTANCE. SOMETIMES I FEEL THAT HUMANS ARE LIKE THIS. THAT WE LIVE IN A DISPOSABLE SOCIETY. OUR FRIENDS, FAMILY, MEMORIES, THE LOVES OF OUR LIVES, CAN BE FORGOTTEN BY THE SLIGHTEST DISTRACTION. THE WARS WE HAVE FOUGHT, THE DEAD WE HAVE BURIED, WE GO DAYS WITHOUT THEIR MEMORIES. FOR SOME REASON I CANNOT LIVE LIKE THIS. I REMEMBER EVER WORD SOMEONE SAYS TO ME IN ANGER AND LOVE, I REMEMBER EVERY TIME THERE IS DISCORD AND THE DISAGREEMENT OF NO ACCOUNT. I RECALL THE BEAUTY OF LOVE'S FIRST BLOOM AND THE DEPTH OF THE FIRST MEETING OF LIPS ON LIPS AND THE FIRST ROSE AFTER WINTER, IT'S PERFUME RESTS IN MY NOSE AND IN MY MEMORY. I REMEMBER FRIENDS THAT HAVE CALLED ME BEST FRIEND AND HAVE HUGGED ME CHEST TO CHEST AND I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT FEELING OF CLOSENESS. THESE ARE ALL THINGS THAT I ONCE FORGOT AND NOW HAVE COME BACK TO BLESS ME. I CHOOSE TO REMEMBER ALL THINGS IN MY LIFE, GOOD OR BAD. THEY ARE ALL PART OF MY SOUL AND PART OF WHAT MAKES ME MIGUEL AND ALL OF YOU WHO READ THIS, I WILL REMEMBER THAT ON THIS DAY, A SUNDAY, YOU READ MY POEM AND I WAS HONORED THAT YOU DID AND I WILL REMEMBER EACH BRUSH STROKE THAT YOU PAINTED AND EACH WORD, EACH GRACIOUS WORD THAT YOU UTTERED ABOUT MY PAINTINGS AND MY WORDS. I WILL NEVER FORGET. WRITTEN BY MIGUEL IF YOU FORGET ME written by PABLO NERUDA I want you to know one thing. You know how this is: if I look at the crystal moon, at the red branch of the slow autumn at my window, if I touch near the fire the impalpable ash or the wrinkled body of the log, everything carries me to you, as if everything that exists, aromas, light, metals, were little boats that sail toward those isles of yours that wait for me. Well, now, if little by little you stop loving me I shall stop loving you little by little. If suddenly you forget me do not look for me, for I shall already have forgotten you. If you think it long and mad, the wind of banners that passes through my life, and you decide to leave me at the shore of the heart where I have roots, remember that on that day, at that hour, I shall lift my arms and my roots will set off to seek another land. But if each day, each hour, you feel that you are destined for me with implacable sweetness, if each day a flower climbs up to your lips to seek me, ah my love, ah my own, in me all that fire is repeated, in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten, my love feeds on your love, beloved, and as long as you live it will be in your arms without leaving mine

Great story and very wonderful work!!

Artist Reply: Hanna, thank you so much for your kind comments. I purposefully wrote and introduction to Pablo Neruda to show the difference between the ways of forgiving lovers and making a pact with oneself that is giving your love under the conditions your honoring it and not using it as a tool to withdraw when you were displeased. Some might not understand this or live like this but it is sometimes a method of never having to live in a lie or to exist with the pain of knowing that someone is withdrawing their love slowly and methodically. That is the biggest tragedy in love. My gratitude for you gracious comments, Hannah. I hope your weekend is remarkable and delightful. Michael

I had not read what Neruda had written and I am truly shocked! His poems of passion, love, devotion, tenderness, magic......all based on possessive, conditional love? Sounds it to me and if so, my shock is joined by a profound disappointment. If only I could go back in time and find out from the very source himself. Thank you again, both for your story and my "Neruda education" tonight. ao

Artist Reply: Neruda was all you said he was and more. He chose his lovers carefully, his politics and friends as carefully and he devoted his self to their lives. He was the consummate friend and lover. But in the devotion that he so freely gave and expressed, he expected that back. If you withdraw even the slightest bit of what he considered a treasure to him, he would have already known, so wise and astute a man he was. So his warning in that work was that if you withdrew a small part of your love he would have known it before you realized it and he would slowly protect his generous heart by withdrawing himself. We are all capable of that, although we are not warrior enough to say that. He was. I respect him for that as I know that if someone withdrew there love for me because of my beliefs or my work them I would have already had my bags packed. It if was that I had showered you with enough love that would take on a different timbre. In that I would correct my devotion to you, for it is that devotion that leads to the spiritual love that we all seek. My grateful thanks for your comments. And don't be too harsh on Pablito, he was a magnificent and devoted man. Michael

There is a comfort in knowing the strongest survive. Real life has to be fought for with all of your heart and memories. To love deeply and not have it returned, I am afraid could not easily be forgotten. Does the horse fight for love or just for survival? I am sure I would fight for my love, and if it is not returned...am I able to turn away and seek another like the defeated stallion. I do not know. Some never can. They do not forget. Today's actions are tomorrow's memories...we should make them the best we can. Beautiful piece, showing tremendous talent.

Artist Reply: Minnie, my deepest gratitude to you for you thoughts on this piece. I am in a slight bit of indecision about which is better. I think it requires so much energy to hold onto things that have negatively affected one, then to just release them. Some of these ill feelings carry over to the innocent and they become a victim of your memories and that is not fair. So sometimes I just weigh the harm that has happened in loving and not having it returned and finding out later, or doing it to keep from being alone or loving one for wrong reasons and finding out that the fire in your belly was just passion, as is the attraction the stallion has or the desire to procreate. All of these are just seem to be as devastating as the other. But to carry it around is to drink a small amount of poison daily. One does not die, but is sickened by the small drink that one takes and it makes the blood that is pure impure and the actions impure and no one you care for deserves that for what is in fact your history. So I try and forget what I can and my life has more joy and tranquility then when I held a grudge. I am not sure about the stallion but they are driven differently then some men, not all, but some. I am wired differently then that and it seems to serve me. I also try and give my best, while saving my persona. I know you understood the difference in the two narratives and what they meant. Although Neruda is my favorite poet he also is unforgiving and for that I believe he suffered. I do not choose that path. My gratitude to you for your great comments. Very astute and of the spirit. Very much what I like to read. Have yourself a lovely and loving holiday and know there is much to be thankful for and even more coming that we don't know about yet that is going to be remarkable. My affection to you Minnie and thanks again for being a great thinker. Michael

DEarest Michael, I had words that I was writing but now all that has left me. I have been focusing on your reply to Jeanie........reading it over and over. I hope the Black Stallion's eyes return to their beautiful soft nature, that his snorting fury subsides and that he is peacefully grazing again. Beautiful words in the story and in your reply to Jeanie.....Tonight, a special bow to you....ao

Artist Reply: Thank you Anon, I really appreciate your comments and kindness. You are so generous in your words. It means so much to me that my work is appreciated and understood. Have a glorious Thanksgiving. Michael

Jeanie Chadwick 19 Nov 2007

So deep...such heartfelt, bittersweet words. I'm happy that your love is more unconditional than Neruda's, for friends and lovers alike Miguel. The image is not nearly as powerful as the words, nonetheless beautiful and very strong. The red eyes intrigue me.

Artist Reply: Jeanie, my deepest thanks for your sincere words, I really appreciate you telling me your feelings about my works. Neruda, although a romantic was a bit of a misogynist and used his words as a magnet, which worked for him. Being a political man and worldly also made him a bit jaded. My travels and involvement has only made me more wanting to give the right thing to those I love. So we differ a bit although he is my favorite poet. On some occasions things trip my emotional trigger about projecting one's emotions on another and that always makes me want to be better and know what it is about the human experience that causes that. Thus my introduction to the work of Neruda, which is more strict and unforgiving. I am more yielding and able to forgive the moment's distance. I have a harder time when there is the withdrawal of love as a punishment in silence and no explanation. It is a severe punishment. In the case of the horse's eyes being red, it is that at that moment he is furious and an hour later it will all be gone, the emotions, the anger, the rage, and he will be peacefully grazing with his mares and only remembering the moment of rage through any pain that has been inflicted. There will be no intellectual discussion with himself about his actions, no regret, no boastful feeling. And Jeanie, this is not how I wish to live. So the battle of the two stallions is sometimes one within me, one that I also fight with my heart to quell. So there is a second battle and one I now can easily win. My deepest thanks for your in depth look at the writing and the painting. I know that you have thought before you have spoken and that means the world to me. Have a most glorious Thanksgiving with your family and I know it will be loving and wonderful. My affection and gratitude to you, Jeanie. Michael

Gerrie Olly 19 Nov 2007

Michael, You never seize to amaze me. I would say you are hitting your stride. Curiuos is that a book you are writing along with your paintings, poems or daily ranting (thoughts)? Great job! xoxox

Artist Reply: Actually, that is a book concept that will be have companion writings and musings, that go with the paintings. Some are destined to go with others as the Stallion piece is, but others aren't married to a piece of art yet. But I do have many other pieces of written word and paintings that will be in the book. Actually I have been talking about this a great deal lately and have an artisan book maker in Florida, who is a friend of the family and a publisher as well, who might help me design the book. But a very large book with the images as hand printed photographs that are signed and numbered that can be framed and taken from the book and not harmed so that one can buy a full book of original art and conceptually a method to hang the prose by the painting in a similar frame and mat if you wish. The written work will be printed and slightly embossed in rare font, and on hand made Italian or Japanese paper and be the protective agent between the photographs. The cover will be a distressed hand tooled leather and bound with perhaps elephant hair that is braided with rare bead work. So I have it made in the concept but to find the book maker who is an artisan will be the trick, but I think the family friend will love to do it. Books should be loved and caressed and thought to be treasures as I think of great books, not that mine is or will be, but others are and I plan to have mine be in that category. Great discerning powers you have. My gratitude for your kindness and have a most glorious Thanksgiving. Michael
