I Have Become Destroyer of the World

I HAVE BECOME DEATH DESTROYER OF WORLDS OIL ON STRETCHED CANVAS $900 US (14” X 18” ORIGINAL) SIGNED DEDICATED PRINTS AVAILABLE In the eleventh chapter of the Bhagavad Gita Krishna displays for Arjuna a terrible ferocity. “I have become death, destroyer of worlds”. These words were uttered by J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, when first he laid his gaze upon what he had help create. I pray that the better angels of men have laid to rest this atomic Genie. We, as a species, are the only species that can truly alter life on this planet. Our prowess gives us much hope and expectations that we use wisely the gift of reason and intellect. But vigilance must be our guidepost. Never allowing a wayward few to pirate these hopes and aspirations. We cannot afford to dismantle in the fireball flash of a moment all the past good deeds of humanity. As an artist I have very little influence on the world. Except that I do have my paints, my brushes and my canvasses to do with what I want. I reflect on the artists that have gone before me and their influence on the world. Goya’s, “The Third of May 1808” or Picasso’s “Guernica” come to mind. It sometimes falls upon the shoulders of artists to comment and to illustrate what message they have received from their Muse. I am reminded of Virgil’s “Aeneid” where he speaks “O, Muse! The cause and the crimes relate; What goddess was provoked, and whence her hate”. So, I am not alone. Why paint scenes such as these? I wish not. I prefer light, magical and visionary themes but when the Muse demands that I paint such omens I must pay my debt to Her. It is Her fee that she demands payment of from me, if I wish to continue being an artist. visionary imagist “Joey”

Joey, although this painting shows your skills beautifully, I can understand that you feel somehow forced to paint it. It's a terrible message that's in it. It's so good that you remind us of that evil, to make us realize that this should never happen again!

Artist Reply: Anneke: Thank you for your profound and wise remarks. i always appreciate and value your opinions. again thank you.

Joey, it is strange that the atoms, were life and the landscapes on earth, are build from, can turn against us by that deadly invention of one man. What many men have build up can be destroyed by the power of one.

Artist Reply: Gabrielle: Your words are so true. Well thought comment my friend.

beautiful image. actually it's ominous only because of the colors. If this was in blues and greens it would appear as a lovely underwater scene. I think probably man will destroy this planet and something else will inherit it. the meek? Life will continue. It will just be different. I just think it is a shame we were entrusted with this beautiful world and have messed it up with technology and machines and been so spiteful and superior toward nature. It is a kind of macho western civilization agressiveness that has polluted and destroyed plants and animals and poisoned humans, both physically and spiritually. So there.

Artist Reply: John; Thanks for your profound and wise comment. it is greatly appreciated. again thank you.

My special friend. Indeed have I too pondered on man's insatiable drive to conquer and destroy but what is it that he truly seeks to conquer and destroy? Is it perhaps that part of himself called the soul? For indeed when actions such as violent evil are outwardly manifested, has man not already created that evil within himself first and killed and destroyed his own soul? Then that evil is driven to snuff out the life of others for infact, that insatiable need to destroy becomes ever increasing and begins to involve the number one evil, having no regard for the lives and the will of others. If God does not take away our free will then what right does another have to attempt to do so? Killling is such an atrocious evil because life and death are God's to give and take. When we step on God's turf and begin to attempt to overrule His will and commandments then we are truly following the greatest of all evils, the Devil himself. May God have mercy on man for his wanton willfullness that is causing God's hand to befall upon us as we become ever more wayward children and The Parent has to intervene with His punishment before we snuff ourselves out entirely, taking our souls with us when we make that descent..... My heart and my prayers are with you my brother. May God continue to use your heart, your mind and all your gifts to make the statements which He desires that you make, His call to those who will listen.....

Artist Reply: Tahnja: Your valued words are always appreciated. I love the way you express the ineffable. What profound insights you describe. I always look forward to seeing your name appear upon my screen. Take care my friend and you and yours always remain in my prayers.

Joey...Very POWERFUL Statement in ART and in words. Important message. You know what...YOU know what you created here...but if you wish..or me actually as viewer without reading you wish ... can look at this painting from other different point op view...totally different by the way. We as people & as artists are different...and we look sometimes similar and sometimes different at the same things. ALSO...Inspiration ,as LIFE demands from each of us different price..or different approach to ART, or what we should or would bring with our art. AND..I guess this is how it should be, everyone must do his/her best, the way he/she knows or understand.

Artist Reply: Nira; thank you for your profound remarks. thank you my friend for sharing with me your art and your words. take care.

Ann Fawssett-Atkin 10 Jan 2008

You already know my thoughts about painting the ills of the world - 'as above, so below' ie what one thinks about helps it to materialize...I may of course be very wrong and your muse right to prompt you to so strikingly promote vigilance - so very well done. Much looking forward to your next light/ magical/ visionary peaceful painting.

Artist Reply: Ann: Thank you. I always appreciate your valued comments and look forward to brighter moments. I value your wisdom and your art as well. thank you my friend.
