Cancer and the Czech Dancers (2008)

I am a healthcare provider, who happens to be the dance instructor for a folk dance group from a Czech-American community. Two of my dancers are women of Czech descent, who grew up together and shared a passion for folk dancing. Because there are always fewer men than women in such groups, they often danced together. One of the two friends developed breast cancer, which eventually took her life after a long courageous battle. Her friend, out of solidarity, shaved her head during the period of chemotherapy. They were both proud to wear their ethnic costumes despite the incongruous juxtaposition of their bald heads and their flowing skits. Cancer could not and did not defeat their friendship, their pride in their community or their passion for dance. To them both na zdraví (to health)!

The story really makes the painting and without it there would be something missing. The combination of the two works so well together.

Oh my goodness dear Dave, what a heartwarming story about friendship, passion, pain and sorrow ... You did an awesome job and this painting is my pic of the day to show all artists on AW how beautifully you painted the courage of these two women, the battle one of them was fighting it embodies exactly what you wrote so beautifully in this text: "...They were both proud to wear their ethnic costumes despite the incongruous juxtaposition of their bald heads and their flowing skirts. Cancer could not and did not defeat their friendship, their pride in their community or their passion for dance.........." An exceptional piece of artwork David! Bravo! ... Love & Light~Olga
