Costa da Morte

© 2008 Armando Salas.--- I must be grateful. Thank you to all of you, the artists sharing my Peixeiras challenge. While I was working on my own version my mind was working as well:-) I thought this subject matter (fishermen, women of Costa da Morte... my culture) could be a source for new works. This means, I am very inspired and ready to work in two different ways: paintings like "Peixeiras" and illustrations for books like this one.--- This "Costa da Morte" starts a series.--- I'm enjoying so much to work by using colored pencils (Thank you Brigitte Hintner and Peter Kripgans for inspiration. Before I saw your gorgeous art I always thought colored pencils were "toys for kids" :-) SORRY!!!:-)). ------------------------------------------------------------

Carliss Mora 10 Aug 2008

I've been out of the "loop," I guess. What does that word piexeiras mean? This is a beautiful, and different media, I think, for you. I am still trying with the color pencils, to make something as inspiring as this. Great art here, Armando!

Artist Reply: Hi, talented Carliss. "Peixeiras" started as a challenge. More than 20 artists are involved in this project. There is a fantastic, succesful and very illustrative thread in General Discussion Boards about this subject. Peixeiras are women selling fish/seafood. PEIXE (Galician language)=PESCADO (Spanish)= FISH. PEIXEIRA is a woman that sells PEIXE.-----This one is the 4th drawing I made by using colored pencils. In the beginning I thought colored pencils were a kind of "toys for kids" until I saw Brigitte Hintner and Peter Kripgans' artwork. I always use rugous paper. Not sure about the result by using a glossy one. My advice: do a try and you'll adore colored pencils forever! :-) It's a contagious virus:-)))

Cristina Marsi 07 Aug 2008

After following each phase of yor work I'm happy to see it finished! As i said already for a similar work, your hand must hurt after so much pencil coloring. It was worth it though :)

Artist Reply: Your comment made me smile, Cristina. I'm sure I was a drawer in another life. Perhaps I painted those bisons at Altamira caves:-) This means, I began to paint in Quaternary:-) No, my hand doesn't hurt. Actually, I only work 2-3 hours. The finished work took 10-15 hours. My secret to avoid the pain is: let your hand and wrist "dance", I mean, secure but soft movements; this way you haven't rigidity in your wrist. In the 80's, when I drew/painted HUNDREDS of fairy tales I used to draw/paint during 18 hours, taking break only to eat or take a cup of coffee. I never had pain in my hand or wrist. Yes: my secret WORKS! :-))) Thank you for your comment and visit here. Already working on my new projects... what about your Leiteiras and Afiadores? :-))))))

It would be a great illustration for book, dear Armando ... expressive work and executed very skilfully. P.S. I feel flattered that you posted my work instead of you own photo. Thanks a lot. I’m going to paint you portrait in acrylic later and post in my portfolio.

Artist Reply: Thank you, Izabella. I posted your work as selfportrait because I liked it so much. It's the first abstract I post and it'll be there for a while. Before I posted works made by Kukua Akumanyi, Alan Zinn and few more I don't remember now (sorry!:-). AW members also posted portraits or caricatures I made for them. By the way you and Nikolay look SPLENDID as Peixeiros :-)))
