The back story to my latest colored pencil painting is a bit unusual. A three-dimensional still life piece was hanging in the gift shop at a pick-your-own pumpkin patch we visited several years ago. It was just for display and not for sale. I asked for and got permission to photograph the display. What intrigued me as I studied the photo more closely was the contrast of textures present. The texture of a three-dimensional object may be soft, fuzzy, rough, or even smooth. In two-dimensional works of art texture also may refer to the visual "feel of the image". I realized that I could sense the "feel" of the objects in the photograph. When objects feel in reality as they appear in a realistic work of art, this is called "actual textures". This is also the title of the colored pencil painting rendered from my photograph. I hope that my rendering triggers both visual and tactile senses as you view this artwork. This piece was done on Grafix drafting film using Farber-Castell Polychromos pencils. The size of the unframed artwork is 18 X 12 inches.
