The English Cavalier

The history of the Civil war in England is a subject that is not particulary well known - in the United States that is. Basically, it was a war between forces of King Charles I (the Cavaliers) and his parliamentary members who formed a puritan force which became known as Roundheads (for the type of helmet they wore) their leader was Oliver Cromwell, a member of Parliament. The war lasted from 1642 1651. King Charles was captured and beheaded on January 30th 1649, outside the Banqueting House, which still stands, in Whitehall, London. After ruling with an iron fist for many years Cromwell died in his bed in 1658 and his son, Richard, ruled for a short time. In 1660 the son of Charles I returned to his kingdom and rightful place, ruling as King Charles II .. the restoration of the monarchy followed - a great period of arts, music, painting and prosperity. This Cavalier officer is dressed in the colors of the Queens Lifeguard Regiment .. the White Plumes ( note the ostrich feathers in his hat).. He seems in reflective mood as he stand in this English garden. Maybe he is contemplating the forthcoming Battle of Marston Moor or perhaps the Battle of Naesby? I am enormously grateful to Sher Richardson who made many enhancements to this image. Indeed, it would not be the image it is here without her special talent . . . . . . . . Many thanks Queen Sher.
