The Ruffed Grouse

These young grouse, (6 of them), crossed the trail and weren't the least bit bothered by the dozen people standing there. We like to refer to them as "mountain chickens"because they cluck. We find them all over, but mostly in the higher elevations. They are easier to find in the high meadows and alpine forests, than down in the lower elevations where the undergrowth is thick. The second picture isn't a great shot but it shows how they blend into their surroundings. This hen had a chick with her conceled so well that he didn't show up in any of the pictures that I took. You just have to believe me that he was there...:)
