Terracotta Temptation

A multi layered painting using various techniques resulting in several contrasting parts to the whole painting. A base colour of burnt umber was applied with a palette knife the whole image. This was then left to dry. A second coat was applied with a mixture of crimson and burnt umber. Before it was dry, I scraped off selected areas to leave a paler segment underneath. I then used a metallic terracotta paint to draw swirls of small dots along the top half of the painting. These were left to dry, then I applied another coat of burnt umber over the top. This gave the impression that the metallic dots were raised within the painting rather than placed on top of it. I added lost more patterns of terracotta dots throughout the painting. Finally I used a dark brown acrylic ink to create a series of bubbles at the lower half of the image. This is an anstract painting which you can interpret any way you like. My mood was quite intense when I painted this, yet I knew exactly what I wanted to achieve regarding the final arrangement within the piece, therefore it is precisely painted. The painting is only small - 6x4 inches, however it is mounted and framed, so that the overall size is 10x8 inches.

inspired by gustav klimt?

Artist Reply: Actually, no, it wasn't. Although I can see why you ask that question! I'd not even considered Klimt as a source of inspiration before - maybe I should have a look at more of his work.
