TARRED AND FEATHERED

GREAT GROUND HORNBILL - CENTRAL AFRICA - Poised on one foot as he hunts the brush for bugs and lizards to eat. Watching intently for the slightest movement with lighing speed he will snatch up the victim in the tip of his beak. Then deftly throw his head back tossing it in the air and then down the hatch like he is eating popcorn in front of a TV. About the size of a small turkey this hornbill is much larger than other species of hornbills. Only the male sports the large red gizzard he will inflate to attract a mate. This species spends most of its time ambling about on the ground in the bush searching for food.
