MALE HIPPO WITH HIS HAREM - AFRICA - KRUGER NATIONAL GAME PARK-------Photograph Details: Male Hippo gives me the evil eye.----------------------- I was a very bad boy to get this shot. In the National Parks you are not supposed to get out of your car, for very good reasons. We had pulled alongside this river and I just could not get a good shot from the front seat. I very cautiously crept down to the river to get this shot, a big no no. You can bet I had one eye on the finder of my camera and one eye on the car door. Hippos can be very unpredictable and dangerous. Hippos kills more people in Africa than any other animal. This guy was making all the motions like he was ready to come on out and rumble. I think he thought I was giving one of his babes the eye. As you can see the cute babe in the background to the right is blowing bubbles at me. I slowly retreated to the car just after taking this shot. Never taking my eyes off this Hippo for one moment, till I could feel the car on my back. The central Hippo in this image is the male, the ones surrounding him all females in his harem, which he will defend fiercely from all intruders. Other male Hippos in particular.
