BLUE PLATE SPECIAL

IMPALA BUCK WITH HIS HAREM OF FEMALES - SOUTH AFRICA - KRUGER NATIONAL GAME RESERVE--------------Shown here is the male impala with a four females of his harem. In this image you can see front, back and side colorations as well as the face markings. This antelope is at the top of everyones menu. They breed prolifically and are as common as rocks everywhere in Africa; despite their commonality they are quite lovely. Delicate and light of bone, with a handsome coloration of gold, brown, tan and black blending very well with the monochromatic brown grasslands and bush they favor. Very sleek and fast of foot, always alert to danger they pose a great challenge for the big cats to catch. When startled the entire heard will take to motion with great speed in a dance of light and shadow in perfect unison like a symphony of ballet dancers. A most impressive sight, much like watching a wave complete its cycle as it comes in from the ocean. This image is a perfect example of selective use of dept of field. As such the intention is to make the central theme of this image (the buck) stand out. All that needs to be seen in the way of details of the foreground doe for information purposes can be seen. If the image had been taken as you with a smaller aperture and the does were in sharp focus this would draw the viewers eye away from the buck, the central theme here. A smaller aperture used to accomplish this would also have completely changed the background foliage, bringing it in to sharper focus and changing the contrast. Making for an overall less successful image with far less impact. When viewing this image enlarged on a computer one screen you should slide your chair back so that your eyes are about thirty-six inches from the screen, this will allow you to view the entire image without strain to your eyes.
