Selling Art Work, Would Love Your Opinions.

I recently posted a thread under the general discussion form about the new ebay fees and how I am very unhappy with it. This is sort of related but I though I should post it another place rather then add it on to the old thread so it doesnt get lost in the crowed and because now I want to focus more specifically on this question.

Many of the people are talking about trying to sell their items on other auction sites such as Yahoo Auctions, Overstock.com and Epier.com I have looked into all three sites, doing a search for fantasy art and fantasy painting and hardly anything came up at all.

My question is do you think this is a good or bad thing. On one hand it could be a good thing since I could get my foot in the door before these site becomes more popular due to ebay fee increases and have a well know name as a fantasy artist there and less competition.

On the bad side, it could simply mean it's not worth my time because there aren't any people there looking for fantasy artwork. I guess in all its about taking a chance because you don't know unless you try. Maybe Ill look into message boards there and see what people think, if anyone there has an idea for how popular the sites are ect.

So what do you think?

Hmmm, I looked to see if I could ask on some of these web sites message boards, and even tried to ask people there directly from their auctions, But it seems I need to be a member to do this first.

Candace have you ever done art shows or any type of SciFi Art/ Comic book fairs, book signing events, or If you could find one possibly a Renfest type events, Fashion shows? Any theatres from High Schools/colleges need your art Help. for example sketching the costumed characters, illustrating promotional posters? Here on my side We have Dickens on the Strand, Kemah boardWalk. Of course Mardis Gras, and The Silver Dollar Ball, some of these events host charity Art Auctions and dinners and so Forth. One particular event is a casino night, I have asked some of the event chairpersons, but sometimes it is lucrative about getting your art up for show/ charity auctions. When you are there in person at different events, with your Artwork, you meet people and they will be delighted to be handed a business card. I try to keep my business cards as simple as possible, what helped me was purchasing a domain name and Now I need to try and raise funds for supplies and promotions, I am very Delighted with Pete Millers of Bashplanet.com web work, He has created a very beautiful web site that I would never have been able to accomplish myself, Can you check your local newspapers?, community news, Community/Civic centers?, Church Arts/Crafts Fairs, Art Newsletters, Colleges, events calendars, My friend was allowed to show her work at a library and the staff there was very kind to her, Best of luck, I love your work and Yes Ebay is becoming Thiefbay we had issues with out credit cards when we attempted to sell on ebay

From my experience it is better to spend your time developing a 'personal relationship' with places and people to sell your work. When people buy paintings from me they are really buying a little bit of me too - and the experience needs to become a 'happy memory" my philosophy is to develop a rapport with my gallery visitors and from that they want to know a little bit about me, the story behind the painting etc;, and see me in action - this is just one idea and it does work - while the internet is great for generating ideas and information and contacts, it does in this place come down to the personal ... maybe you need to look at alternatives

ps go for it though and maybe publishers of fantasy books might be a good idea - even childrens literature . . .

best of luck and i hope this helps a little wendy

I would think your style would fit nicely into science fiction conventions. There are several good listings online, and many allow mailed-in work. Truth be told, I didn't make much money there last year, but am not overly discouraged. When I started selling on ebay, a lot of people recognized my stuff from the conventions. I don't think it could hurt you to try those other sites, but it takes awhile for your stuff to become familiar. That interim period can be discouraging as heck, especially if you're putting out more in fees than you're taking in.

Thank you to all those who responded to my thread, I think you are all probably right, I need to get out there to fantasy shows and exhibitions and talk with the people, hand out some business cards and things like that. Ebay will only get me so far and Id like more traffic coming through my actual web site.

There is an art gallery/store near me that I will look into. I was considering it on the past and they seemed excited to have my work there but in the end decided not to. But I might look into that again very soon.

So now its just a matter of finding out where to take my artwork :) In the mean time I think Ill continue with ebay until I feel its really time to move on, maybe Ill just list my best pieces that Im confident will sell.
