ARTIST STATEMENT I tend to work in themed suites, primarily in oil, on canvas primed with black acrylic and always with music playing in the studio while I paint. My paintings have become symbolic universes that function as narratives to my timeline of being. While I do not exhibit my work as self-portraits, they are based on the concept of capturing the world around me; as well as within me. They are motivated by what it is like to be a woman in contemporary culture and my interests in where we have come from – my own ancestry and the cultural traditions that continue and morph over time, becoming visual diary pages. With my more recent work, the figures are absorbing into their backgrounds – becoming part of the memories of the past, reflections of the moment. While the work has personal meaning to me, my intent is for the viewer to find a connection to something within their own life story.
