This a a small (about 1 - 1.5") cowry indigenous only to the Caribbean. The spots are on its 'mantle' - a thin membrane the animal uses to camoulflage itself. When the mantle is retracted, the shell is automatically polished - the reason why cowrys the world over are quite shiney. this creature is 'hiding' on a fan coral. Flamingo Tongue Cowry
