I thought this was a large spider web. But as I got closer I could see movement inside and the caterpillers. They had devoured the leaves on the tree covered by the web-like material. The caterpillers also kept flicking their bodies, it was very weird.

Nice effect of an illuminated veil and the refraction of light by the strands. You almost expect that moments later, a sleepy jogger ran right through it.Anna Lo Bello 14 Sep 2005

Wow! Awesome shot n info! Love the webs n the catters!! I have never seen anything like this until maybe a couple of days ago myself!! In some trees where I live. I thought they were spiders too, maybe this is what I saw, I didn't go up close I was planning on it but, didn't. It was in someone elses yard when I took the Bandit Boy for a little run. I was going to go back n look though. Cool the way they weave like that n the colors of the light breaking on the webs a r beautiful. But I see the leaves getting eaten 2. Do U know what they look like with wings? I don't neat shot Teresa!!!eileen martin 01 Sep 2005

It is a wierd scene when you first see this.. I too thought they were spider webs when I saw my first tent catepillars in the Grand Teton in Wyoming..It was on a much smaller scale but is was strange watching them twitch inside this semi cocoon webbing..Nice shot TeresaLoredana 31 Aug 2005

I could show you photos of whole areas of forests destroyed by tent caterpillers.. Places we would go camping around Manitoba's Whiteshell Provincial Park. They are terrible, ravenous creatures and eat all the trees leaves. Great journalist photos - you have really captured them! :o)Joke Schotting 31 Aug 2005
