The Mysterious Companion

Algernon Ambrose has been around the world. Literally, and many times. So it's not entirely known just how many places his feet have walked through, or what he did in all these exotic locales. What is known however, is that no matter where he went, he always rented a room for two... even if the hotel clerks saw him arrive alone and with only his own luggage. Seen often with an unidentifiable woman in many of his research locations, the speculation is that the joy they derived from each other's company (which can be seen clearly here in this drawing from a now-lost photograph) would have been easily ruined should anyone learn the identity of Ambrose's mysterious companion. Perhaps there were familial disagreements, perhaps her name was too well known to be connected to the well-respected, but often warily treated reputation of the Ambrose Estate. Whatever the reasoning behind their secrecy, there are very few surviving images of Algernon and this intriguing lady. This graphite drawing, at roughly 10"x13", is the largest.
