~1970 Mercury Cougar. The Cougar gave Mercury its own "pony” car (between Ford's Mustang and Thunderbird) as the only generation with covered headlights (1967 & 1968) which operated with a vacuum system to open and close headlight doors. A redesigned vacuum system (1969 & 1970) kept the doors down with vacuum conditions in the lines provided by the engine (when running). If a vacuum loss (system failure) happened, headlight doors retracted up keeping the headlights visible.
