Here is my latest pet portrait :) Meet Trouble, I drew him from 3 not so good pics....he was a friend of mine's dog that I guess my friend just could not keep and he misses him a great deal so here is Troubles portrait....see that tooth? He had that tooth poking out in every pick so i know my friend will love this :) Cant wait to give it to him...so what do you guys think of my pet portraits so far?? I think I really want to get into the business of drawing peoples pets :) I would love any feed back!

I really like this one. It's so full of character and yet very subtle. A nice way to remember a pet. :)

Your pet portraits are awesome Leah! I say go for it. Be prepared to not succeed for a while, because the marketing is the trick. However if you love doing it and your passionate about sketching animals I think that you could do well being a pet portraitist.

Margaret Platt 19 Feb 2008

Leah, I think this is my favorite of your animals..you really captured the expression on this wonderful face!

I think you are well on your way to having the ability to do pet portraits. I would like to see the pictures you used for your drawings, that way I would know how accurate your drawings are. Just write up a contract for prospective customers to sign and go for it, I'm sure you will do well.

You have a real talent for drawing people's pets. I love photographing them. They are such great subjects given their innocence, sense of wonder and those funny antics. There are many fantastic books by brilliant dog photographers. We need more people like you who know how to capture the essense of the dog. You have to love them to be able to capture the nuance and character and see detail like the tooth that makes this portrait so endearing. Start drawing more dogs and you will keep improving since you have the talent and obviously adore your subject. I want to take more dog pictures and donate a portion of my proceeds to my many dog charities. Mikey is a therapy dog and worked at Children's hospital on the Oncology Ward. Forty kids would greet him in the recreation room and he intuitively knew how to relate to each kid. Some he hugged and others he would keep his distance knowing they were afraid. He had a staff badge with his cute freckled face on it stating that this "doctor" must be admitted to the hospital 24/7. One brave seven year old boy asked if Mikey could hold his hand throughout the night. He told his parents that the doctors had done all they could and he knew he probably would not live throughout the night. He held Mikey's paw for hours without my dog moving and passed away with a smile on his face. I was in tears knowing how amazing dogs are and how important it is to treasure them with all the love we can. Now I take Molly to elderly facilities who eagerly await her loving visit. Research shows that the elderly live longer if they live with a companion animal and for everyone petting a dog, stress is relieved and blood pressure is lowered. There are some facilities that allow the residents to have their own dog. I want to commit more time to therapy work with my dogs. I use them in my private practice as my co-therapists and they are more sensitive than many mental health practioners that I know. This is a priceless portrait. I hope to see more of your pet portraits. You have a gift that could bring a lot of joy to many people.
