I am trying to do a different painting of Chief Joseph as part of my portraiture lessons. Can I ask you what colours you used for Joseph's skin in this painting?
Any advice would be greatly received.
Artist Reply: My basic fleshtones are mixed using titanium white and then adding a red such as cadmium red (light), a yellow such as yellow ochre or cadmium yellow, and a bit of burnt sienna. To make dark tones, I'll add burnt sienna, burnt umber and ultramarine blue to the red. You can experiment on your palette to get the variations in between. When the basics are painted and dry, I like to go back and drybrush little bits of strong color into the shadows, such as blues, greens, or violet and warm up the lighter tones with a hint of red. I apply the paint sparingly to the stiff bristle brush and lightly drag it. Sometimes, I'll also make little glazes of tint and wash it over in the light areas.
kathy working in oil . this maybe the best of them all. drama, expression, mood , feel , detail and composition. i really like this painting . the detail is tight ( dead on accurate ) but there is a looseness. i really like the way you slightly use the red in the skin tone ( look at the chin and you'll see where i am coming from ) you did the same thing in the dylan portrait wit the blue . this almost looks like a pastel but i can tell it's oil with the brushstrokes ( and if i am wrong then shame on me )
THIS SHOULD BE UP FOR SALE I CAN SEE YOU HAVING A CLIENT WHO IS INTERESTED IN NATIVE AMERICAN ARTWORK.
this is a great image kathy-san . i am jealous . i couldn't come up with this on my best day
happy new year
