This year only one of the baby swans lived to maturity. The one with the slightly dingy colored feathers and duller bill is the immature bird at 7 months or more. Josey Ranch Lake, Carrollton, Texas

It is sad how often snapping turtles get the little ones. For some reason Canadian Geese are much more alert and better parents. Many more of their chicks survive then do the swans. I suppose we wouldn't treasure them so much if there were so many more of them though. Great shot!!!!!
